2025-2026 ACT & SAT Testing Dates
If you’re planning to apply to college in the 2025–2026 school year, you’ve probably heard that many schools (including HBCUs) are now test-optional. But before you completely rule out taking the ACT or SAT, here’s what you need to know.
Why Test If It’s Optional?
While most HBCUs no longer require test scores for admission, submitting strong ACT or SAT scores open doors to competitive merit scholarships. Even if your GPA is solid, schools often use test scores to help award institutional aid, especially for out-of-state students or those applying to honors programs.

Changes to the ACT
Starting with the 2025 test cycle, the ACT Science section is now optional. It will no longer be factored into your composite score, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important. If you're thinking about a major in science, math, engineering, or other STEM fields, it’s highly recommended that you take the Science section. It’s an easy way to show colleges your readiness for a rigorous major. It's also important to note there is an additional fee to include optional sections like science and writing.
Make the Test Work for You
Test-optional doesn’t mean test-blind. If you send them, they will see them. So take advantage of the opportunity to stand out. Use the summer or early fall to test while you’re still in the academic zone. If you’re not happy with your scores, you don’t have to send them. But if you do well, they could help unlock thousands in scholarships.
