Why Attending an HBCU Open House Should Be on Your College Planning List

Why Attending an HBCU Open House Should Be on Your College Planning List

There’s nothing quite like experiencing a campus for yourself when you're trying to find the right college. While a traditional campus tour gives you the lay of the land, an Open House takes your visit to the next level, offering a more immersive, hands-on way to see what life could be like as a student.

If you’re a high school junior or senior (especially), Fall is prime time for these events at many HBCUs. "Open House" might not even be the name you see on the invitation, so pay close attention while you're looking and planning. Schools often give it their own unique spin, calling it Preview Day, Connection Day, Showcase, High School Day, or even something personalized like A Day In Your Life at Spelman College or Jaguar Preview Day at Southern University.

What Happens at an Open House?

Every school adds its own flavor to the day, but you can expect activities that go beyond a standard walking tour:

  • Campus Tours with Student Guides – Hear first-hand what it’s like to live and learn there.

  • Admissions and Financial Aid Sessions – Get clarity on applications, scholarships, and FAFSA in one sitting.

  • On-the-Spot Acceptances – Some schools will review your application right there. (So bring your HBCU Planner and your official transcripts)!

  • Student Activities Fairs – Explore clubs, organizations, and cultural life on campus.

  • Special Opportunities – Like musical auditions (choir & band) at Alabama A&M or football tickets to games at Southern University, Alabama State University, and Bethune-Cookman University for a true taste of school spirit.

Why You Should Plan Ahead

Open Houses are popular and space is limited. Many require registration in advance, and spots can fill quickly. Plus, there’s often a deadline, so waiting until the last minute could mean missing out. While most take place in the fall, some schools also host spring sessions if you need a second look or can’t make it this semester. This can also help you make decisions on where you will apply and still meet the early action deadlines.

Your Next Step

We’ve rounded up the Fall 2025 HBCU Open House dates to help you plan your visits. If your school of interest isn’t listed, it’s either because they don’t host an Open House or they haven’t released their dates yet. We’ll update this list as more information becomes available. You can always visit the school's website for more information or to schedule a traditional campus tour if they do not offer an Open House experience.

An Open House is your chance to test drive your future college. You’ll meet future classmates, explore academic programs, and get a feel for campus life in a way no brochure or website can capture.

If you’re serious about an HBCU education, don’t just read about it...go live it for a day!
